Colonic Irrigation

Colonic irrigation, is a safe and effective way to hydrate and cleanse the colon of hardened waste, toxins, bad bacteria and parasites, preparing the gut to establish and sustain a healthy microbiome.

Colonic Irrigation is also referred to as colon hydrotherapy, colon cleansing or colonics. All of these are names for the process which uses warm, purified water to cleanse the colon – water in, waste out.

“When I was going through chronic fatigue in the early 90’s, colonics were a key factor on my path back to wellness.  Though the initial thought of this therapy didn’t exactly thrill me when it was suggested to me, it was nowhere near as scary or uncomfortable as what I’d imagined.  The difference I felt even after the first session had me sold and I’ve continued to have them each year since, a varying number of sessions, depending on what I need at that time”

There are immediate and long-term health benefits you’ll experience when you begin colon cleansing. Our clients report better gut health, increased energy, clearer skin and sounder sleep as some of the immediate results. Some clients go through an initial detox reaction such as headaches and tiredness, but this is generally short lived.

Long term health benefits will show in all areas of the body. Every system will function better with a clean, well-functioning gut and healthy microbiome. The colon is a reflex organ, meaning it has connections to every other organ. A sluggish, toxic colon reduces the efficiency of other systems in the body causing tiredness, poor concentration and lowered immunity.

Why is the colon key to good health?

The colon hosts the microbiome, the internal eco-system of bacteria that synthesises vitamin B12, folic acid, thiamine and vitamin K. The influence of the gut on health and wellbeing has been widely researched and it is now known that a healthy colon with a balanced microbiome contributes to better sleep, stronger immune function and good mental health. Good gut health is the basis of wellbeing and fitness, and the integrity of the intestinal tissue play an important role in detoxification and disease prevention.

Ideally colonic irrigation is used periodically as a detox measure and for disease prevention, however the treatment can also be used to correct a variety of health issues.

Some clients go through an initial detox reaction such as headaches and tiredness but this is generally short lived.

The colon is one of the major organ of elimination along with the liver, lungs, kidneys, skin and lymphatic system. It makes up the last 2 – 3 meters of the digestive system, completing the digestive process by absorbing water, nutrients and synthesising key vitamins.

What causes the colon to function sub-optimally?

There are a variety of reasons why the digestive system functions sub-optimally. There can be genetic predispositions or autoimmune diseases that underlie or exacerbate certain disorders. Lack of exercise, not enough sunshine, stress, poor sleep, medications can all have an impact on digestive health. For the most part faulty nutrition and poor lifestyle choices are responsible for the majority of digestive disorders.

This is actually good news because it means we have the power to make changes that will lead to better results. Processed food with no nutritional value, dehydration, gluten, dairy and sugar sensitivity eventually lead to the breakdown of intestinal tissue. The colon, being the ‘rubbish bin’ of the body and the final part of the digestive system is left with the job of eliminating bodily waste, but if there isn’t enough water, fibre, vitamins and minerals or essential fats the microbiome can become unbalanced, causing a host of health issues.

Of all the processes essential to maintaining good health, the elimination of toxins is one of the most important. We live in a toxic world where we are exposed to hundreds of chemicals and pollutants every day. The body is always undergoing detoxification as a natural function which keeps the body chemistry balanced, but with increasing toxic assaults from the modern world it can become overwhelmed. Helping the body stay on top of this toxic stress is one of the most important steps you can take towards achieving optimal health.

The most important reasons to cleanse the colon

We are not designed to carry around years of build up waste and a colon that is backed up and sluggish eventually interferes with the function of other organs. Various digestive disorders such as IBS, constipation, bloating and gas can be traced back to intestinal toxaemia and microbiome imbalance. Over time these disorders may progress to more serious conditions. Cleansing the colon sets up the right conditions for a healthy microbiome, which acts as the army of the immune system. Along with proper nutrition, hydration and exercise, detoxifying the colon will result in better digestive health, stronger immune function, clearer skin and sharper thinking.

How does colonic irrigation work?

Colon hydrotherapy is the infusion of warm, ultra filtered water into the colon. You will be comfortably reclined in a private room and given step by step instructions and support. A small, disposable tube about the diameter of a pencil is self-inserted into the rectum to facilitate the entrance of water into the colon.

The water slowly and systematically travels around the colon for 45 minutes, softening and breaking up blockages and removing them from the body. Each client will experience the procedure differently depending on their digestive health, however most clients are relieved at how easy the experience is compared to their expectations. For most people the procedure is refreshing and relaxing.

“I’ve been to a number of colonic hydrotherapy clinics over the years, both in Sydney and in Melbourne and for the last five years or so go to Cleanse in Hawthorn where the bubbly Rosie Laurino is always helpful and makes you feel welcome”
